Spurs On This Day – Graeme Souness Makes His Debut

The 14th September has been an eventful day in the history of Spurs. On this day, Spurs played their first games in the UEFA Cup both seasons that they would go on to win the competition.

The 14th September was also the day that Graeme Souness made his one and only appearance for Spurs and the day that Christian Eriksen made his debut for the club.

Goals: Alan Gilzean (3), Alan Mullery (2), Ralph Coates

18 year old Graeme Souness came on as a substitute for Alan Mullery in this game, it was his one and only first team appearance for Spurs. This was the first game Spurs played in the 1971-72 UEFA Cup – a competition they went on to win.

Spurs beat Drogheda 14-0 over two legs in the UEFA Cup 1st round in 1983. They later went on to win the competition, beating Anderlecht on penalties.
